Battery energy storage systems will replace meters! Power companies plan future energy storage market with energy storage leasing policy

2020-6-6

Polaris Energy Storage Network News:Polaris Energy Storage Network learned that according to foreign media reports, the US Vermont government recently signed and approved an energy storage plan, which means that Green Mountain Power will implement two energy storage plans at the same time to promoteUser-side energy storageapplication. And the long-term plan of GMP is to pass the batteryEnergy storage systemReplace the meter.

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)

The BYOD program is an open incentive system for customers who want to add batteries. The project selects 500 customers who purchase their own batteries through local installers each year to provide up to $10,500 in upfront bonus funds, which can support up to 5MW of energy storage equipment. The premise is that participating customers need to agree to provide the electricity from their energy storage systems during peak demand hours to meet the electricity demand and thereby reduce electricity prices. Moreover, in this project, customers can freely choose from a relatively rich list of battery suppliers.

Tesla Powerwall

The Powerwall project allows customers to rent energy storage systems at a fixed price, which can save a lot of costs compared to standard installation methods. It is understood that Tesla's Powerwall energy storage system has an energy storage capacity of 13.5kWh. The project also supports 500 users to install 1,000 Powerwall energy storage systems each year, totaling 5MW/13.5MWh. Participated customers can choose to rent two Powerwall battery systems at a price of US$55 per month, with a lease period of 10 years (can be extended to 15 years without additional expenses), or choose to pay US$5,500 to advance to obtain the 10-year service life of two Powerwall battery energy storage systems. But again, customers need to agree to participate in demand response during peak power demand.

Since the announcement of GMP becoming a permanent partner with Tesla, the utility company GMP has reportedly installed some Powerwall batteries in its service area for peak cutting. GMP said in July 2018, it saved $500,000 in electricity bills for all electricity customers by convening about 500 Powerwall battery energy storage systems to participate in the summer power peak-cutting demand. In the 2019 Powerwall project, more than 1,000 users received registration applications.

Energy storage systems replace meter

According to Green Mountain Power, this incentive project for energy storage has other significance. They hope to replace the meter with battery energy storage systems in the future through 18 months of testing.

State areas such as Virginia and Kentucky have reportedly rejected plans to increase smart meters or advanced meter infrastructure on the grounds of concerns about costs and net benefits.

According to Mary Powell, GMP CEO, GMP has begun to view battery energy storage systems as a means to subvert the current metrology model. GMP is committed to developing the function of reading energy consumption data through the Powerwall energy storage system. It is trying to apply for relevant patents. In the future, it will install a battery energy storage system with the function of measuring energy usage in each residential area to help power companies manage electricity loads, and at the same time promote renewable resources to be connected to the grid.
