The World's First Commercial Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Generator Set has Completed Grid Connection and Commissioning

2025/11/12

On November 9, the world's first commercial supercritical carbon dioxide (CO₂)generator unit successfully completed grid connection and commissioning at Shougang Shuicheng Steel in Liupanshui, Guizhou, laying a solid foundation for the full-power operation of subsequent units.

This project, jointly promoted by the China Nuclear Power Research and Design Institute of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) and Jinan Iron and Steel Group International Engineering Technology Co., Ltd., is the world's first 2×15 MW supercritical CO₂ sintering waste heat power generation demonstration project. Upon successful power generation, it will improve waste heat utilization efficiency by more than 50% compared to existing sintering waste heat steam power generation technology.

As a revolutionary thermoelectric conversion technology, supercritical CO₂ power generation technology uses supercritical CO₂ as the working fluid to achieve efficient and stable power generation. Benefiting from the material properties of supercritical CO₂, this technology has the core advantages of high efficiency, ultra-compactness, and fast response, filling the long-standing gap in energy and power technology for small and medium power scales and high-temperature heat source scenarios worldwide, and is expected to expand to larger power and higher temperature application scenarios in the future.

After more than a decade of continuous research and development, the Nuclear Power Institute has established a comprehensive industry-academia-research system for supercritical CO₂ power generation technology, forming a complete domestically produced industrial chain. In October 2019, the Nuclear Power Institute achieved the world's first stable full-power supercritical CO₂ power generation in a laboratory. In October 2023, the Nuclear Power Institute signed a demonstration project contract with Jinan Iron and Steel Group International Engineering Technology Co., Ltd., launching the construction of the Liupanshui supercritical CO₂ power generation demonstration project in Guizhou Province, bringing a new technological revolution to the utilization of sintering waste heat.
